First Trimester Screening at AGH

Quick facts

·         Testing is performed when the fetal measurement is consistent with 11 weeks 1 day to 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy.

·         The test modifies a mother’s age-related chance to have a child with Down syndrome.

Patient specific chances for these problems are calculated using the ultrasound measurements of the size of the baby and the fluid within the skin at the back of the baby’s neck in combination with levels of specific substances in mother’s blood.

·         About 85% of babies with Down syndrome  will have a positive test result, with a 5 % false positive result.  It is important to realize that this screening test or risk adjustment test DOES NOT identifiy all pregnancies with Down Syndrome.

·         A signed consent form authorizing the testing is required by the laboratory and will be provided to you for your signature when you arrive for your appointment.

·         Results are generally available in 3-5 working days.

You will be contacted by phone with the results.

Your doctor or midwife will receive a copy of the results by fax.
